The U.S. Embassy in Brazzaville supported the joint initiative of Congo Brazzaville Fulbright Alumni Association (CBFAA) and the Brazzaville English Clubs Council (ECC) to organize a public venue cleanup in celebration of Earth Day on April 26, 2014. Nearly 100 hundred volunteers from the De Brazza High School, English clubs, Fulbright alumni and U.S. Embassy personnel committed to clean the outdoor space in front of De Brazza High School. All volunteers, wearing t-shirts that read “Let’s Fight for a Cleaner Congo,” continued to cleanup despite bad weather.  Ambassador Stephanie S. Sullivan also volunteered to clean and encourage young people to continue their involvement in cleaning and protecting their immediate environment. After the cleanup, the alumni association donated trash cans, wheelbarrows, and other cleaning materials to De Brazza High School. This project also stands as a follow-up of the CBFAA Alumni Innovation Funds grant by the U.S. government to raise awareness about environmental protection at Marien Ngouabi University and public high schools.
