Ambassador Eugene Young’s speech at the opening of the 3rd edition of the Christmas Market. November 29, 2023
November 30, 2023

I am honored to be here today with our partners to kick off the third edition of the Xmas Market. This year, the Xmas market is organized under the theme “enhancing local production paves the way for local growth (valoriser la production locale, c’est poser les jalons d’une croissance énonomique locale)”.  It will run for two weeks, starting today to December 13.

At the opening ceremony of the second addition last year, I said that Congolese women in business, and in other sectors, are the driving force behind the growth and diversification of the Congolese economy. That’s truer today than ever.  I totally agree with U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris who said: “When you lift up women, you lift up communities, you lift up economies…”.

We see the progress, you, women entrepreneurs, have made since the first edition of the Xmas market two years ago.  You have formed entrepreneurship clubs to improve, to share your experiences and learn from each other.  You have reached out to and continue work with women entrepreneur and artisans in neighboring countries and beyond and have increased your productions for local and external markets. Some of you have continued to travel to the United States and other parts of the world to participate in fairs, learn and share your experiences. – Ladies, you inspire us!!

Shirley Chislom, the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress said, “Tremendous amounts of talent are being lost to our society just because that talent wears a skirt”. Luckily, in Congo the tides are turning. The government, the private sector and the civil society are working hand in hand to nurture talents of women because without their contributions, no substantial progress can be made.

Ladies, I am happy to see so much talent and commitment in what you do for yourselves, your families and for this beautiful country. And as the United States Ambassador to Congo, I can promise you that the U.S. Embassy will continue to work with all our partners to support the crucial work you do.

Your Excellencies, the Unite States of America will remain a trusted partner for advancing our shared interests and goals. By supporting Congo’s economic diversification and growth, we promote shared prosperity for the Congolese and the American people.

Finally, I invite the public to come and enjoy made-in-Congo products and to get holiday season gifts for their loved ones.

Long live women entrepreneurs!

Long live the partnership between the USA and Congo!
